My life in 27 Shots

Two hundred years ago, French engineer Nicéphore Niépce took the very first photograph in history. Printed on a tin plate coated with bitumen and exposed for three days, the image is certainly imperfect, but reality is indeed captured in it: we see a roof, a courtyard—the surroundings of the engineer’s home.

Capturing reality, choosing a frame, and showcasing their daily lives—that is what the participants in the visual arts workshops did as part of the “27 Poses” exhibition. How did this project come about? It was the brainchild of Emmanuel Stip, a psychiatrist who has been working with Les Impatients for over thirty years.

Dr. Stip’s travel photographs are thus placed in dialogue with images taken by the Impatients, limited for this occasion to the 24+3 shots offered by a disposable camera and to the contours of the Quebec City metropolitan area shrouded in winter.

Once assembled, the images take on new meaning, and geography loses its relevance. The viewer even finds themselves wondering whether it’s the doctor or the “impatient” who took a particular image—only to realize in the end that it doesn’t matter at all.
